What will you be doing at the Global Leadership Academy?

Participants are expected to arrive throughout the day to the Brookes Cambridge campus. Local pick-up and transportation will be provided from either Cambridge International Airport (CBG), Cambridge Train Station or Heathrow International Airport (LHR).  As students arrive on campus, they will be assigned a room, provided a brief orientation, food, and a chance to unpack and settle in. Activities or entertainment will be organized, but optional. Today is a chance to get some rest and relaxation in preparation for the adventure of a lifetime in these next 2 weeks.

The first official day of the Global Leadership Academy starts with lots of exciting activities and the opportunity for participants to get to know each other, our staff, and all that the campus can provide. Participants will set up their online learning portfolios, and do their first exercises as we tackle the big question: “what is leadership?” Participants will be divided into home groups, and team challenges will help bring students from around the world together as a group.

Confidence is something that every leader needs but can only grow by expanding their comfort zone. Throughout the day participants will be asked to explore, challenge and overcome their physical and emotional fears which hold them back from future success. Participants will take on a 12 metre high ropes course and support each other through any fears or challenges along the way. They will also take part in other exercises designed to increase their confidence, and then be asked to apply their newfound confidence as they are introduced to and asked to start working together in order to prepare for one of the most challenging aspects of the program… the Service Challenge.

One of the major benefits of leadership is providing meaningful service to others, so our morning begins with both learning about and volunteering at a local community organization.  Participants will not only get to give back to their host community, but they will also gain a better perspective on the issues and challenges that leaders face in trying to change their community for the better. Other activities today are focused on figuring out all the different skills, ideas, and elements that define “a leader”, how to inspire others, and the importance of reflection in leadership growth.

Communication and collaboration are among the most important skills youth need for future success. Of course, better communication is often easier said than done, which we think is the problem. Through a variety of inspirational videos, outdoor team challenges, and research insights, we attempt to get at what truly effective communication is all about…and why most people fail at it.

With only days to plan and minimal money to spend, teams of participants take to the streets of the local city centre to try to raise as much money as possible for a charity or non-profit of their choice. How will they do it? What approach will they take? Where will they be? That’s all up to them! This challenge (and wow, is it a challenge!) demonstrates how it does not take a lot of time or resources to make a difference, and we’ve had teams raise hundreds and hundreds of dollars!

Taking the time to explore what one has done and learned in the past week is an important aspect of critical thinking. Today’s activities don’t just focus on fun, such as visiting the nearby downtown of Bury St. Edmunds, shopping, and doing a scavenger hunt across the city. Youth will also learn how to go about the process self-reflection and improvement.  Participants can do this many different ways and may choose to try art, music, dance, writing, discussion, or other means of reflection.

Passions are as powerful as they are unique among all of us. Today is a chance for all participants to both explore as well as share their passions which make them so interesting. Whether it’s photography, sports, art, music, nature, animals, travel, or anything else, aligning your passions and values with your goals helps young leaders develop a clearer vision of their future purpose. With Service Challenge behind us and lessons learned, it’s turn to turn our attention towards the biggest project participants will take on at GLA: DREAM Service Project. Participants will also be introduced to the tools that will help them succeed in their upcoming leadership projects, such as “SMART” goal-setting and program management tools.

Participants spend the day testing out what they’ve learned so far while taking part in a service learning trip with a local organization. After returning to campus, there is time to continue working on the DREAM Service Project and then for some fun large group activities at night!

It’s an exciting day… we’re off to Cambridge! We will first tour Cambridge University campus and visit famous locations across town, learning about the city and university’s rich history! In the afternoon we have an optional activity visiting Cambridge’s top museum, or simply time to explore, shop, and take photos. A dinner out on the town rounds out the day, where we celebrate all we’ve accomplished so far!

Collaboration is delicate and difficult balancing act of combining your ideas with those of other people.  Today’s focus is about how to engage in the process of collaboration through a variety of engaging small group activities and challenges.  In the afternoon, participants according to their interested will be asked to create a large and inspiring work of art, music, dance, theater or film.  This piece will collaboratively convey the complex idea of what leadership truly means…no small task given only several hours to accomplish.

Today is a decathlon of uniquely designed team events that are as much fun as they are lessons on teamwork.  Today is all about knowing how to make your way through the team development process of forming, storming, norming and eventually, performing.  Each member of your team will need to work together physically and mentally!

This final day of the academy is dedicated to each participant’s final presentations that they have been working on throughout the experience. Every young leader will present their Dream Project, with the top projects from each team presenting in front of the whole program that evening. The evening then becomes a special graduation celebration, as elegant as it is heartfelt for all the work, time and laughter shared among lifelong friends.

Participants leave the academy but take with them all that they have learned, experienced and felt along the way. Transportation to the airport or train station is pre-arranged and provided by the program.

All instruction is done in ENGLISH, however, we do not have any English language requirements since we are an experienced based program leadership training program.  We suggest that students do try to have at least a proficient level of English, or the ability to speak and understand short statements and questions in English, but this is not a requirement.  By far the most important requirement is to have a positive attitude and desire to develop your skills as a young leader.
