The Junior Leadership Academies are a jumpstart for young teens ready for an exciting challenge!
Youth are powerful but often lack skills such as confidence, leadership and global perspective necessary to be great leaders of their own future success. The Junior Leadership Academies are based on our successful GLA programs and designed to provide younger adults ages 12-14 years old with an age appropriate and engaging 2 week summer program packed with team challenges, fascinating field trips, breathtaking outdoor activities, inspirational guest speakers and new experiences historic Cambridge United Kingdom.
SUMMER 2016 LEADERSHIP PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
- 133 young leaders attended from 18 different countries around the world.
- Each participant completed 60+ hours of community service and service-learning hours.
- All participants will get to not only learn leadership skills, but explore various passions and new cultural experiences everyday with youth from around the world.
What is the GLA program schedule?
All participants are expected to arrive through-out this first day. Local pick-up and transportation will be provided by Dwight School Canada from either Victoria International Airport (YYJ) or Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal, so long as students share their travel itineraries at least 5 days in advance of their arrival date. As students arrive on campus, they will be assigned a room, provided a brief orientation, food, and a chance to unpack and settle in. Today is a chance to get some rest and relaxation in preparation for the adventure of a lifetime in these next 2 weeks.
The first official day of the Junior Leadership Academy starts with lots exciting activities and the opportunity for participants to get to know each other, our staff and all the campus can provide. From the waterfront, to the state of the art facilities to everything in between, participants will get know everything they need to know in order to have a comfortable, safe and exciting 2 weeks. Since jet-lag is common on this day, optional evening entertainment is usually a popular blockbuster film.
Learning how to become a better leader is a learning process a lot like swimming, you need to do it to get better at it. Today’s activities and experiences are focused on figuring out all the different skills, ideas and elements that define “a leader.” Participants will discuss, dance, and work together in order to prepare for one of the most challenging aspects of the program…The Service Day Challenge
Confidence is something that every leader needs but can only grow by expanding your “comfort zone.” Through-out today, participants will be asked to explore, challenge and overcome their physical and emotional fears which hold them back from future success. Whether its conquering a 20 meter high ropes course, or speaking in public, most fears can be conquered with just one moment of courage.
One of the major benefits of leadership is providing meaningful service to others, so our morning begins with both learning about and volunteering at a local community organization helping those in need. Participants will not only get to give back, but they will also gain a better perspective on the issues and challenges that leaders face in trying to change their community for the better. The afternoon is a combination of fun outdoor activities and presentations on various new and exciting service initiatives they might want to get involved with.
Explore the stunning English countryside as well as the local town of Bury St. Edmunds. On Sunday, we travel to explore London itself and all the magic and majesty that comes with a full day no stone unturned tour.
Taking the time to stop and reflect about what one has done and learned in the past week is one sign of a truly committed leader. Today’s activities not only focus on fun, but about how to go about the process self-reflection and improvement. Participants can do this many different ways and may choose to try art, music, dance, writing, discussion, or other means of reflection.
According to the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, a influential coalition of businesses, educators, and policymakers to position 21st century readiness at the center of education, communication and collaboration is among the top 3 skills youth need for future success. Of course, better communication is often “easier said than done” which we think is the problem. Through a variety of inspirational videos, outdoor team challenges and research insights, we attempt to get at what truly effective communication is all about…and why most people fail at it.
Passions are as powerful as they are unique among all of us. Today is a chance for all participants to both explore as well as share their passions which make them so interesting. Whether its photography, sports, art, music, nature, animals, travel, or anything else, aligning your passions along with your values helps young leaders develop a clearer vision of their future purpose. Do you know what passions artists and doctors have in common? Would you believe that most passions we have are strongly related to courses of study and careers you may not have considered before…
Today is a decathlon of uniquely designed team events that are as much fun as they are lessons on teamwork. Today is all about knowing how to make your way through the team development process of forming, storming, norming and eventually, performing. Each member of your team will need to work together physical and mental
Collaboration is delicate and difficult balancing act of combining your ideas with those of other people. Today’s focus is about how to engage in the process of collaboration through a variety of engaging small group activities and challenges. In the afternoon, participants according to their interested will be asked to create a large and inspiring work of art, music, dance, theater or film. This piece will collaboratively convey the complex idea of what leadership truly means…no small task given only several hours to accomplish.
This final day of the academy is dedicated to each participant’s final presentations that they have been working on through-out the experience. Every young leader must give a short presentation about a fully designed passion project they wish to carry out in their community, as a means to further develop their dreams as a young leader. The most well designed and passionate presentations will be selected among the entire academy and then presented before a panel guest leaders. The evening then becomes a special graduation celebration, as elegant as it is heartfelt for all the work, time and laughter shared among lifelong friends with a special surprise later in the evening.
Participants leave the academy but take with them all that they have learned, experienced and felt along the way. Transportation to the airport, ferry or other means is provided by the program.

To officially register for a program, we must receive an initial $300 CAD deposit to reserve your place into the program(s) as well as issue an official letter of registration required to issue a tourist VISA.
You may pay the non-refundable deposit as well as the remaining tuition balance at once or in installments.
Please arrange and share with us your flight/travel to/from London Heathrow or Cambridge International Airport so we can arrange pick-up and drop-off from that airport. We are happy to help you research and select the best possible flights.
Check to see if you need to apply for a United Kingdom Tourist Visa. Participants need only a “visitor” visa. You do not need a custodian declaration form to attend the program
We will issue you a registration letter required for obtaining a visa once we receive your deposit payment.

The Junior Leadership Academy is open and encourages all young adults around the world to apply. Our only requirements for admission are that you will be between the ages of 12 to 14 years old by the time that you attend the program.
All instruction is done in ENGLISH, however we do not have English language requirements as we are an experienced based program. We do suggest that students have at least a proficient level of English, or the ability to speak and understand short statements/questions, but this is not a requirement.
Youth will stay on campus in school dorm rooms with capacity for 4 students. Each room is large enough for each participant to have their own bed, dresser, desk, and closet space. We assign students to dorms according to gender and to promote diversity, we reserve the right to decline all requests to stay in the same room with someone you may know.
- 8-weeks prior to program start date: Full refund of program fees (Deposit is not refundable)
- 4-weeks prior to program start date: Refund 50% of program fees (Deposit is not refundable)
- Within 4-weeks of program start date: No refund of program fees
- Deposit is only refundable in the case of a denied visa. Proper documentation must be provided.
